Africa’s Big Five…

Update

I did a follow-up cartoon, of sorts, here.

Mountain biker gets taken out by a buck

Mountain Biker, Evan van der Spuy of Team Jeep South Africa got taken out by a RED HARTEBEES at amountain bike race at Albert Falls Dam. Check out this crazy footage which was taken by team mate Travis Walker on his GoPro Camera – The BUCK sure does STOP HERE with Evan van der Spuy aka #BUCKNORRIS [YouTube]

My guess is that the buck confused the cyclist with Bryce Lawrence.

Coldplay in Cape Town (and first time in Africa)

Coldplay performed at Cape Town Stadium last night. my wife and I went along to see them. She’s a fan; I’m indifferent. We parked a few kilometres away and used the cheap and shiny MyCiti buses to and fro.

We had Golden Circle tickets which, in reality, is just a euphemism for “expensive drunk stampede”.

Coldplay are, admittedly, very slick, live. They’re a solid Brit pop band complete with catchy hooks, interactive multimedia, and creative musicianship. I certainly have a heightened level of respect for them, now. Particularly because Chris Martin introduced the band by apologising for taking so long to visit South Africa because of their “delayed visas“.

That was pretty funny.

Here is a poor quality video montage that I took with my cellphone. You’ll figure out the first two songs; the third is that “Viva la Vida” one, which – for whatever reason – ended up being one of my favourites on the night.

It was also Coldplay’s very first performance on the African continent.

No, I’m not going to elaborate on The Parlotones. I’m still recovering.

Update

Here are some nice photos, compliments of 6000 Miles From Civilisation, from the back of the stadium.

I won the regional leg of the 2011 Vodacom Journalist Of The Year (cartoon category)

Today, Vodacom informed me that the judges had voted a certain Jerm as the winner of the Western Cape leg of the Vodacom Journalist Of The Year, which means that I will be attending the final (national) leg in Johannesburg during November.

The news came as quite a surprise, especially because it’s the first time that my work has been officially acknowledged like this. (Initially, I thought that the phone call was a prank.)

Here is the cartoon they chose.

Submissions had to have been published between April last year and April this year. I didn’t want to include cartoons from The Times (because that would have been weird). So, my options were narrowed down from twelve months worth of cartoons to a little under four months worth of cartoons (since The New Age only launched during December, and since I got married and went on honeymoon a short while before that).

Update

Much to my surprise, this cartoon won the national – and overall – cartoon award in the 2011 Vodacom Journalist Of The Year.
